JOHN POPPER PROJECT- Featuring DJ LOGIC
DISCLAIMER:
Some of you with very good ears or excellent reading skills may notice that some of the words you hear don't jive with the words on the liner notes.
There are two reasons for this, as the writer of the lyrics the 1st reason doesn't really bother me. This example to which I am referring speaks to subtle things such as pronouns (e.g.: "I ain't from Missouri I'm from Misery" is written, "I ain't from Missouri I'm in Misery" is sung.)
Throughout the album there are subtle discrepancies like this. The occasional word like "my" is missing, or "our turn" instead of, "our own turn" and "nothing to prove" is "nothing to move" etc...
This is because the album was written so fast that the lyric writing had to remain fluid. The English language is fraught with such subtlety, that various vocal takes remain different from each other in an on going artistic discussion with myself and my producer to fully explore every texture and inflection, thus making the most appropriate statement. To me this is not in conflict with the spirit of the album and generally in most cases the improvisational approach has not corrupted the essential meaning.
There are however two examples that fall under the category of the 2nd reason. This reason pisses myself as well as Gina off and that reason is simply this, Gina and I were working on a small budget and had to do all the proof reading ourselves. This ultimately comes to long hours of reading and re-reading and dictation by means of long distance telephone. Add to this the fact that Gina and myself smoked a lot of pot in our lives and never stayed in school, lets just say we never studied.
The resulting two casualties to which I am referring have had their meanings so changed that artistically they require re-printing. In future printings the appropriate corrections will be made, so if you have the in-correct lyrics I guess you could say you have a collector's item.
The first and most glaring error is in the track "ALL GOOD CHILDREN" everywhere you read the phrase "I think I get what the children need" it should be written "I think I get what the children mean." Aside from the beginning of the 3rd verse beginning "Guess I'll see you around", what is instead written is "Yes I'll see you around", the rest of the lyrics to that song are fine.
The other glaring error in this category is Track 10 "MORNING LIGHT" the discrepancy occurs in the bridge. The quote reads, "All fires rage with the sun going down the option of the morning landing safely on the ground", this is incorrect. Instead it should read, "All fires rage with the sun going down the ashes fall by morning landing safely on the ground." You might notice towards the bottom it says this but it should have been saying this all along.
It is these two tracks and these two tracks alone that these mistakes change the meaning enough to require comment. And while 2 out of 13 ain't bad Gina and I are livid with ourselves. We profusely apologize for any inconvenience and feel fortunate for the opportunity to bring this to your attention. And if any of you would like to proof read in the future and have the necessary experience I know Gina would love to talk to you if not marry you.
Thanks for your kind attention.
John Popper
PS: And by the way, when Gina and I get the chance, the 100% accurate lyrics will be posted. And incidentally "they can batter bash and barricade but they can not kill the dream."
